The PS4 Remote Play app is now available in the Google Play Store

Remote Play is a very interesting new feature that was revealed by Sony earlier this year at the IFA Trade Show in Berlin. The feature allows you to pair compatible smartphones or tablets with a PS4 and play console games directly on your mobile device. Even more interesting is the fact that you even play with a PS4 DualShock 4 controller by a attaching it to a phone or tablet with the use of a special mount provided by Sony. Aside from that, you’ll also need the PS4 Remote Play app, which has been made available for free earlier today on the Google Play Store.

Needless to say, this feature is only useful to those who own both a PS4 and a Sony Xperia device. At the moment the Sony Xperia Z3, Z3 Compact and Z3 Tablet are all compatible with Remote Play. Moreover, Sony says that the Xperia Z2 and Xperia Z2 Tablet will also receive support for the feature at some point in the future. Presumably even more Sony devices will be able to support it eventually, but we’ll have to wait for an announcement from the company in order to find out which ones. A full list of compatible PS4 Remote Play devices is expected to be released soon. Worth mentioning is the fact that your PS4 must have the 2.0 update installed in order for Remote Play to work. The firmware update will begin rolling out to the console today, so wait until it does before attempting to try out the feature.

Now, as interesting as it sounds, PS4 Remote Play has one restriction that will potentially limit its usefulness. The feature will only work as intended if you use your home Wi-Fi network as Sony says that public networks will not be supported by certain games. For the most part, Remote Play will be useful only if you want to play on your PS4, but can’t because somebody else is using the TV.
