Specs and Design for the Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini leak

Samsung’s Galaxy S5 is enjoying great sales figures, and the phone, albeit far from being perfect, is generally liked by the general public and consumers world-wide. The Samsung Galaxy S5 is definitely a solid phone, and few current flagships can compete. Perhaps the only notable competition comes from the similar (and perhaps better) HTC One M8, and the upcoming LG G3. Regardless, Samsung is profiting from a strong and solid base, and is releasing multiple variants of the original S5, as has been the case for several years now. One particular version that many are looking forward to is the Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini.

So far, we haven’t heard anything solid about the S5 Mini, and every information available was speculation at best. We know it’s coming this year, and we know it’s going to be a tuned-down version of the original, but in terms of specs, design and pricing, we were left in the dark. A recent anonymous (but trustworthy) source has leaked information about the Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini to SamMobile though, and we get the first glimpse at the phone. In terms of visual design, the phone resembles the original S5 almost perfectly. It’s the same perforated hard plastic back, with the same color pallets and rounded edges. This is definitely a good thing, considering that S Minis are usually cheaper phones that never really looked or felt memorable.

While it’s not going to be on par with the original, the S5 seems to have some solid specs to go along with the nice design. First of all, we have a 4.5 inch Super AMOLED HD Ready display, running at 1280x720p resolution. PPI numbers aren’t detailed yet, but we’re expecting something along the lines of 400 PPI. The Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini will make use of the Exynos 3470 chipset, which is an Exynos 3 Quad-Core CPU, clocked at 1.4 GHz. The phone will also make use of 1.5 GB of RAM, and will feature an 8 MP main camera which is said to have Optical Image Stabilization. Not bad for a medium-budget phone, and this certainly looks like the most capable Samsung Mini to date. The phone will be limited to 16 GB of internal storage, but all Samsung flagships come with microSD support, and the S5 Mini will make no exception.

Last, but not least, leaks suggest that the phone will come with Android KitKat 4.4.2 out of the box. We weren’t expecting anything less, and by the time the phone is actually released, we can expect the S5 Mini to receive the 4.4.3 KitKat update. Every Samsung specific UI and software feature will be featured in the Galaxy S5 Mini too. The only thing we’re not sure about at this moment is whether or not the S5 Mini will have support for the Samsung Gear 2 (or the upcoming Gear 3), and whether or not it will have the same Health-oriented features as the original S5. The phone is rumored to be announced later this summer, and will become available sometime mid-fall. The estimated price for the S5 Mini is around $450 carrier-free, but we’ll have to wait for specifics before we’ll know for certain.

So how does that sound? Is the Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini more appealing than the original? Granted, it offers less, but it’s also smaller, more portable, and obviously cheaper. This might just make for a perfect mid-budget phone, and for basic daily use, will be more than enough. Let us know what you’re hoping to see in the S5 Mini in the comment section below!
