Moto X Android update to Lollipop rolling out

The original Moto X is one of the best devices you can get on a budget and still bears some Google partnership so that updates should arrive in a timely manner. Even so, it seems that the Moto X Android update to Lollipop is still not available for download and the OTA hasn’t been sent out. That doesn’t mean that the Moto X 2013 won’t be getting the Lollipop treatment, it just means it isn’t finished yet.

The Moto X Android update to version 5.0 should begin its rollout shortly, since we are already seeing the OTA on the Moto X and Moto G 2014. Owners of the first generation Moto X are reporting that they are receiving Android 5.0 Lollipop on their devices in Europe, but most report that it is only a test version. That still constitutes good news regarding the Moto X Android update, because if Google has already begun public testing of the software, that means that a wide release is closer than expected.

Some customer service representatives have already reported to us that the Moto X Android update to 5.0 has already begun its rollout, but as far as we know, very few people have evidence of the OTA arriving to their 2013 flagships. Our question then is why does customer support give out information like that? The first possibility is that they confused the 1st gen Moto X with the 2014 edition, which is a shameful mistake for an insider. Alas, it happens often and we are starting to wonder why Motorola didn’t name de second generation Moto X differently, so these confusions wouldn’t happen.

In any case, we expect the Moto X Android update to start its rollout as early as next week, since a considerable amount of time has passed since the 2nd gen Moto X and Moto G have already started receiving the update. In case you already have Android 5.0 Lollipop on your 1st gen Moto X, report back and tell us how it feels like to have the Lollipop treatment. For those of you still waiting for the update to hit, you should know that once it the Moto X Android update starts its official rollout, it will be done in stages, which means the rollout will happen region by region and carrier by carrier.

We hope the rollout is smooth and all Moto x devices will receive their updates by March 2015 the latest. That might be a bit cumbersome, since certain carriers like U.S. Cellular haven’t even sent out Android 4.4.4 KitKat to the 2013 Moto X, which is odd to say the least. Those of you still on Android 4.4.3 will have to wait the most, since your device will most likely be scheduled to receive Android 4.4.4 before Android 5.0 Lollipop. Sound off below if you’ve received a Moto X Android update in the past few days.

About Egon Kilin

My life-long dream has been to test out every gadget on the market! Considering the fact that I've rapidly destroyed almost every gadget I've had so far, I'm not inclined to owning something, so my ideal outcome would be to have a different gadget each month. I'm really into smartphones, wearables and tablets and I love Playstation and Xbox, I'm sure I'll beat you at your own game (after a month of training... or two)
