Huawei (Ascend) P8 release date and specs revealed on Weibo

It seems leaks are flowing already as we start off a new week, the most recent of which involves the upcoming Huawei Ascend P8, without the “Ascend”. The upcoming flagship will be the first to drop the Ascend name from its branding, as Huawei announced that it would renounce the long moniker that has become a trademark for their flagship. The new Huawei Ascend P8 has surfaced on the Ubuntu Weibo account.

While we’ve lost confidence in the trustworthiness of the leaker, we can’t ignore new information that might be reliable to some extent. We were disappointed in the Ubuntu leaker account when we found out that it had published an image from an old Nokia event and branded it as a new “leaked Nokia laptop” image. Nonetheless, one fabricated leak doesn’t mean all of their information is unreliable, so let’s see what they have to say about the Huawei Ascend P8.

According to their post, the Huawei Ascend P8 release date is set for April 2015, which seems a bit late considering that most believed that the MWC event the Chinese company is hosting will see the unveiling of the flagship. Nonetheless, company executive  Jerry Huang confirmed that April will most likely be the month of the P8. Besides a release date, we also get an approximated price of $480, which seems like a pretty neat price for a flagship, considering the specs we are expecting. Under the hood, the Huawei Ascend P8 might boast a 16nm HiSilicon Kirin 930 CPU, the first chipset to use this technology.

The Huawei Ascend P8 will be one of the thinnest in the line-up, as the leak suggests it will only measure 6 mm, which is admirable, but not surprising. We don’t have any new information about the display size, but previous leaks and rumors suggest a display between 5 and 5.5 inches with a FHD resolution. We also learned that the handset will come with a 2600 mAh battery, which would be small for a phablet, suggesting we will have to deal with a regular smartphone. One other surprising addition would be a fingerprint sensor and the dual camera setup we’ve seen on the Huawei Honor 6 Plus.

Whether or not this leak is accurate, we are fairly sure that the Huawei Ascend P8 will be launched in April at a London event, and it will be one of the most affordable flagships of the year. We are looking forward to many new additions to the smartphone and wearable market in March at the MWC, but most flagship there will most likely go over the $700 price tag, which means Huawei has got a good shot at making it big with an affordable, stylish, feature-filled handset like the Huawei Ascend P8 is shaping up to be.
