Sony confirms that Project Morpheus will feature PS Vita support

We’ve heard about the possible integration of the PS Vita with Project Morpheus earlier this year. Sony’s Simon Benson hinted back in May that the handheld gaming console will play a key role in the future of the virtual reality headset. Recently another member of the company confirmed that the PS Vita is already being used internally by the team. Ian Bickerstaff, Technical Director at SCEE Immersive Technology Group revealed that the console will work with Project Morpheus in a similar way to tablets and smartphones. The company already presented last week some of the apps that will help with the social aspect of this integration.

It appears that Sony has big plans for the VR headset and is looking for ways of integrating it with all their other platforms. We already know that Project Morpheus will feature support for the PS4 as well. Not only that but the connection between the two will be much stronger that anticipated in the future. Head of Sony’s world wide studios Shuhei Yoshida talked about this particular aspect when he emphasized just how important the console will be for the handset and vice versa.

“It’s a big part of the future of PS4 or, on the other hand, PS4 could be a big part of the future of Project Morpheus,” Yoshida said in an interview last month. “When you talk about VR the possibilities are infinite. We are so excited about working on Project Morpheus because the shift from playing games and watching the TV screen and the game world inside the screen to you going into the game world, it’s a huge change. You don’t really have to just play games anymore, you can just go to the places you could never go before.”

Important details about Project Morpheus such as the price or release date have not been announced yet. We haven’t heard of any major titles that will feature VR support either. The only interesting one that pops into mind at the moment is The Assembly, an adventure game that was revealed back at E3 2014. The game is being developed by a small UK-based studios that goes by the name of nDreams and is said to have been designed with Project Morpheus support from day one. But aside from a teaser trailer and a short description we don’t know much about The Assembly either.

The bottom line is that Sony appears to be working hard on the upcoming headset and many of their announcements sound promising. However, for now we don’t really have anything tangible to go on so we’ll just have to be patient for a little while longer.
