Blizzard officially confirms that the Titan MMORPG is cancelled

For the past several years rumors have been floating around that Blizzard Entertainment was working on yet another MMORPG. This new title was said to be called Titan, although this was apparently just its codename. In any case, there have been next to no details in regards to the game and Blizzard never actually announced it. Therefore, many people have started speculating that maybe it never actually made it into development in the first place. Well, Blizzard recently came out and confirmed that Titan was in fact in development for a while, but not anymore. The company announced that the whole project was cancelled due to a variety of problems.

“We had created World of Warcraft, and we felt really confident that we knew how to make MMOs,” Blizzard  CEO Mike Morhaime told Polygon. “So we set out to make the most ambitious thing that you could possibly imagine. And it didn’t come together. We didn’t find the fun. We didn’t find the passion. We talked about how we put it through a reevaluation period, and actually, what we reevaluated is whether that’s the game we really wanted to be making. The answer is no.” Senior VP Chris Metzen also added that “It’s always really, really hard to make those kind of decisions. It was hard when we canceled Warcraft Adventures. It was hard when we canceled StarCraft Ghost. But it has always resulted in better-quality work. The discipline of knowing when to quit is important. We were losing perspective and getting lost in the weeds a little. We had to allow ourselves to take that step back and reassess why the hell we were doing that thing in the first place.”

Blizzard says that the decision to create Titan came after World of Warcraft really took off and started to become very successful. The company wanted to make a second epic MMO that was going to be even better than WoW, but ultimately it just didn’t work out. “It definitely had some merit as a big, broad idea, but it didn’t come together,” Metzen said. “It did not distill. The music did not flow. For all our good intentions and our experience and the pure craftsmanship that we brought together, we had to make that call.” Morhaime says that he wouldn’t say no to making another MMO in the future, but at the moment Blizzard is focusing on its other projects.

That’s not to say I’m all work and no fun, not at all. If my spare time allows it, I like to engage in some good old fashioned online carnage. If it’s an MMO with swords and lots of PvP, I’m most likely in it. Oh, and if you’re looking to pick a fight in Tekken or Mortal Kombat, I’ll be more than happy to assist!
