Apple confirms the iPad Air 2 and iPad Mini 3, more details coming tomorrow

While Google was busy announcing the Nexus 6 smartphone, Nexus 9 tablet and Android Lollipop operating system, Apple made a pretty important announcement of its own. Word on the street is that the Cupertino-based company plans on unveiling the iPad Air 2 and the iPad Mini 3 tomorrow at a special event. Well, it seems like this isn’t just a rumor anymore as Apple confirmed it earlier today, although it may have been by accident. The iPad Air 2 and iPad Mini 3 were spotted in some recently surfaced screenshots of the iOS 8.1 user guide for iPads. According to the images, the two devices will indeed go by these names and will feature a similar design to their predecessors.

Apple was quick to pull down the screenshots, but it was a little too late. Unfortunately we couldn’t learn any more details from the images so we’ll have to wait until tomorrow to learn more about the devices. Rumor has it that both the iPad Air 2 and the iPad Mini 3 will sport Apple A8 chipsets, Touch ID fingerprint home buttons and NFC connectivity for Apple Pay. Further details for the iPad Mini 3 are still scarce, but the iPad Air 2 is less of a mystery thanks to various leaks. The tablet will reportedly feature 2 GB of RAM, an 8 MP primary camera along with a 5 MP secondary shooter that will be able to support 720p FaceTime video calls. Internal storage memory options for the iPad Air 2 include 32GB, 64GB and 128 GB.

While none of this is confirmed by Apple just yet, we’re bound to hear all about the two devices at tomorrow’s event. Leaks have been pretty accurate as of late so we can expect most of it to be true, but take it with a grain of salt for the moment nevertheless. Also at the event, Apple is expected to launch a new iMac line-up as well as the public release of the OS X Yosemite operating system.
