Watch Dogs manages to sell 4 million copies in a single week

Watch Dogs managed to sell more that 4 million copies in just one week after release. This number means that Watch Dogs in now the most successful new IP ever to launch. It also means that it’s the best selling game during the first week for Ubisoft. The company’s statement regarding the good news is surprisingly modest. “With such strong sales momentum and positive feedback from gamers, Watch Dogs has positioned itself as the must-have game of the moment” said Tony Key, Ubisoft’s senior vice president of sales and marketing. “We’re really proud of this achievement, and are confident that the Watch Dogs brand has a promising future.” Meanwhile, the game’s free companion app did pretty good as well. Ubisoft announced that ctOS Mobile has been downloaded and played by more than 1 million people already.

I think everybody imagined that Watch Dogs will have a very successful launch, but this kinda exceeds all expectations. Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of games that have sold much more during week 1, GTA V is a classic example. But Watch Dogs is a brand new IP that was bought mainly because of all the hype that surrounded it. Contrary to some other over-hyped games out there, Watch Dogs actually managed to live up to the high expectations for the most part. There are very few people complaining about the game as far as we know. So, given that the game is very successful one would imagine that a sequel will soon be in the works right? Unfortunately, we learned back in April that this might not be the case.

“Right now there is no such thing as a Watch Dogs 2,” said creative director Jonathan Morin. “It’s certainly not going to be the same amount of time if we ever embark on such a journey. A big part of it was defining whatever Watch Dogs is. Once you have that starting point, then what becomes interesting is what players want more of – what comes next?” Not sure why, but I think the folks over at Ubisoft will give some more thought to the idea of a sequel. Given that the title is so successful why not make a full series out of it? We’ll just have to wait and see what the company has in store for the future of Watch Dogs. Make sure you stay tuned for all the latest news and updates.
