Amazon smartphone said to be exclusive to AT&T

Amazon’s rumored smartphone will be available on AT&T exclusively according to a new report in the Wall Street Journal. It’s a near certainty that Amazon will launch the smartphone, but exactly what kind of smartphone it will be and why is Amazon launching it? The device is believed to incorporate 3D capabilities that let you look at their products online. It’s going to be their version of Android like the Kindle is on the tablet. Maybe it’s going to be a free phone or maybe they’re going to have a service arrangement with AT&T. Many people believe they are going for a subsidizing strategy.

If all they’re doing with the Amazon smartphone is saying that this is a way to connect with their 250 million customers than they’re going to have to do something a little bit special. Sources say the device will incorporate cameras on the display that let it look at your face so that it will be able to tell where you’re looking at. So you could take a quick look at a product and turn it around without having to use touch commands like you would on your tablet or desktop. We’ve heard a lot about this 3D feature, lots of companies have had 3D screens such as the HTC Evo 3D and the LG Optimus 3D for example, but they all failed. Amazon thinks they can succeed with this feature by bringing you into their ecosystem and making it easier for you to listen to music, watch movies or buy products. If they can make it so that you can check out products in 3D before buying them, that might be of interest to some.

A lot of people might look at it and see that it’s sort of a novelty and intriguing at first, but if Amazon has actually found a way of using it to help customers buy products from them, than that would give them an interesting edge. AT&T has done well with exclusives in the past and they try to be into everything so it makes sense that Amazon chose them. Making the phone exclusive to one carrier sounds like they’re only targeting a small portion of their total audience, but maybe that’s just the way they want to do it.

A 3D feature would certainly allow them to stand out from the crowd in the smartphone world and they are bound to attract a certain type of customer. We’ll just have to wait and see how well it’s going to be received once it comes out.
