AMD “Tonga XT” Radeon R9 M295X outperforms the R9 M290X and GTX 780M

AMD Radeon’s Mobility graphics card, the Radeon R9 M295X continues to be veiled in a mysterious aura, as it has not been officially launched yet, and a series of speculations were floating around this mobility card for some time now. Most definitely, it will be based on Tonga architecture and will be codenamed Tonga XT or Amethyst XT, according to wccftech.com. What we do know is that the Radeon R9 M295X will be fueling the iMac Retina 5K, which is the device that made possible these user made benchmarks. The Mobility Tonga is a Tonga based architecture which will be implemented in the Radeon R9 M295X, a graphics card which is set to output more graphics power than its respective rivals, the Radeon R9 M290X and Nvidia GTX 780M. Although this is a simplified OpenGL benchmark, the M295X shows an increased performance compared to the above mentioned cards. Take a look at the comparison stats below, courtesy of wccftech:

Cinebench is the benchmark tool used for this test, and although this is not a complex utility, we can deduct quite easily that it will outperform the R9 M290X in all aspects. It’s the same story when comparing it to the GTX 780M or GTX 770, judging by these impressive results. The Radeon R9 M295X seems to have no problem in outperforming Nvidia’s older high-end GPUs. A more complex benchmark is not available just yet, so for now many assumptions can be made on how the M295X will carry itself head to head with the new Maxwell Mobility GPUs, the GTX 970M and GTX 980M. AMD should be launching the Radeon R9 M295X pretty soon, and only then we’ll be able to see what this card is made of. Take a look at the following Tonga GPU specs sheet.
