The One M7 update cycle has come to an end

One M7 Android Lollipop update canceled, as per HTC

The HTC One M7, one of the best and most popular handsets of the past two years, has been hit hard today as Mo Versi, HTC exec confirmed that the handset would not be getting the next Android update. Google release Android 5.1 to its Nexus line-up last week and hopes were high that the new version of the software, complete with a ton of bug fixes (over 14,000) would also hit older devices that already have Android 5.0 Lollipop. It seems HTC is not joining in with the One M7 this time, to the disappointment of many fans out there.

Mo Versi took to Twitter, as usual. to confirm that the One M7 Android 5.1 Lollipop update would be exclusive to the Google Play edition of the handset, and it won’t be sent out to carriers worldwide. Although the fact that the One M7 will not be getting future updates shouldn’t be a surprise, it still comes as a pretty hard blow for fans, since the device is still rather good compared to what you can find on the market.

When the One M7 was launched, HTC promised two years of timely updates, and they delivered on that promise until now. At least the GPe One M7 will be getting the Android 5.1 Lollipop update in April, according to Mo Versi. Even if April is the target month for the rollout of the update, One M7 GPe owners shouldn’t put too much confidence in that release date, seeing as many things can change in a month.

It’s a bad decision in many One M7 users’ minds because Android 5.0 is not there yet in terms of stability and functionality and Android 5.1 would be an incremental, necessary update, rather than one that just adds extra features. We’re not sure how appreciated this move from HTC will be, but we’re expecting a lot of bad comments in the next few weeks.

About Egon Kilin

My life-long dream has been to test out every gadget on the market! Considering the fact that I've rapidly destroyed almost every gadget I've had so far, I'm not inclined to owning something, so my ideal outcome would be to have a different gadget each month. I'm really into smartphones, wearables and tablets and I love Playstation and Xbox, I'm sure I'll beat you at your own game (after a month of training... or two)
