Samsung Galaxy S5 Prime: Is a premium version really worth it?

The S5 is already considered to be one of the best smartphones currently available, but rumor has it that an improved called Samsung Galaxy S5 Prime is about to hit the market soon. It’s pretty obvious that the premium device will be an upgraded version of the original, but will it be worth buying? That’s the question I keep asking myself ever since I first heard the rumors, and I’m sure many of you have as well.

A while back now Samsung’s CEO stated that a premium version of the Galaxy S5 will not be released as it would just compete with their other device. So why the change of heart? The company most likely felt they will be losing ground as soon as competition gets to intense. The recently announced LG G3 will prove to be the main threat for the S5, there are also rumors floating around about the iPhone 6 and HTC One M8 Prime. I assume Samsung took into consideration the new competitors so they’ve decided to plan ahead.

Many Samsung Galaxy S5 owners are surely upset by now as they were promised a top of the line flagship smartphone for 2014, but sometimes unexpected things happen. So what could convince consumers to take into consideration spending money on another Galaxy S device so soon? Well, a clearly superior set of specs for starters. Let’s take a look at the specifications for both smartphones and see how they compare.

Samsung Galaxy S5

  • 5.1-inch display
  • 1080 x 1920 resolution
  • 2.5 GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor
  • Adreno 330 GPU
  • 2 GB RAM
  • 16/32 GB storage, microSD, up to 128 additional
  • 16 MP rear camera
  • 2MP front camera
  • Android 4.4.2 KitKat

Samsung Galaxy S5 Prime

  • 5.2-inch display
  • 2560 x1440 resolution
  • 2.5 GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor
  • Andreno 420 GPU
  • 3 GB RAM
  • 32 GB of storage
  • 16 MP rear camera
  • 2 MP front camera
  • Android 4.4.2 KitKat

There have clearly been improvements in all areas but is it enough to justify a purchase, especially if you already own a Galaxy S5? If you absolutely must have the best of the best at all times then yes, with these specs the Samsung Galaxy S5 Prime will be ahead of the pack for a while. In some respects, the device seems more powerful than the still unreleased LG G3. Design-wise not much is known, but we can expect the Prime to be similar to the S5, just like the G3 looks similar to the LG G2.

The price is a very important aspect when you’re looking for an upgrade but unfortunately we don’t have anything precise at the moment. We do know however that the Samsung Galaxy S5 Prime is aimed at the premium markets of Europe and the United States. This means that we can expect it to be more expensive than the usual $600-700 no contract Galaxy S5. The Samsung Galaxy S5 is believed to be released this June but an exact date has not been given yet. We’ll let you know as soon as we find out more so stay tuned for more updates.
